What happens when you hit Claude Code limits

When Claude Code stops with a usage limit message, the right move depends on which limit you hit. This is based on Anthropic's Claude Code plan article, limit reset article and pricing FAQ, checked 2026-10-15.

Which limit did you hit?

Pro and Max have a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit; Max also has a separate weekly limit for Fable. These are shared across Claude and Claude Code, so chatting on claude.ai uses the same budget. You'll see warnings as you approach any limit. Check where you stand with /usage in Claude Code or Settings > Usage on claude.ai.

"Usage limit reached · wrapping up"

If you hit the five-hour limit while Claude Code is mid-response, it may keep working briefly to finish the current step. Anthropic says this wrap-up allowance is small and capped, counts toward your weekly limit, applies up to once per week on Pro and each time on Max, and is still rolling out.

Your options

• Wait: the session limit resets every five hours; the weekly one at a fixed time assigned to your account.
• Use a limit reset if you have one: it puts the 5-hour or weekly limit back to full immediately. The "Reset for free" button is on the web or Claude Desktop, not in the terminal, but resets apply everywhere.
• Turn on usage credits: keep working at standard API rates, with a spend limit you set.
• Upgrade: Pro to Claude Max 5x, or 5x to Claude Max 20x.
• Use a Console API account: billed at standard API rates.

Two traps

First, if an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable is set, Claude Code uses it instead of your subscription and you pay API rates. Second, the monthly API credits included with Max can't be used in Claude Code or the Claude apps.

Does switching models help?

For the session and weekly limits, which cover all models, no. Anthropic's pricing FAQ notes usage depends on conversation length, model and features, so lighter models and fresh sessions stretch the same allowance further.
